J.W. Goethe spent over 5 years in Jena, counting all the month, weeks and days together. He mainly lived in the castle and later in the "Grüne Tanne" and in the inspector´s house of the botanical gardens, his "Seclusion in the flower and plant mountains", between 1817 and 1822.
The Goethe memorial consists of two small rooms one of which has contemporary furniture and the second which provides information on Goethe´s work in Jena, as a poet, natural scientist and statesman. The over 200 year old ginkgo which stands in front of the inspector´s house is impressive.
